For 29 years, United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF) has been solving many of the problems Seattle’s Urban Indians face by providing a unique range of comprehensive educational, health and human services that improve their social and economic welfare. The organization was founded in 1970 by a small group of Northwest Native Americans and their supporters, who engaged in an occupation of Fort Lawton. Their goal was to reclaim a land base for Urban Indians living in and around Seattle.
As a result of this peaceful protest, UIATF negotiated a 99-year perpetual lease for 20 acres within what is now known as Discovery Park on which to build an Indian cultural and educational center. The first phase included the construction of Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center, which currently houses UIATF’s administrative offices, Head start and Kindergarten classrooms, and the Sacred Circle Gallery of Native American Art.
UIATF has remained clearly focused on its mission to foster and sustain a strong sense of identity, tradition, and well being among Indian people in the Puget Sound area. Today, UIATF directly serves 5,000 mostly Native American families annually, employs over 100 people, and attracts more than 40,000 people to its cultural and arts events at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. The Foundation maintains a strong link with sovereign Indian Nations and other Urban Indian organizations throughout Washington, the Northwest, and the entire United States. Programming includes Adult Basic Education, Headstart and Kindergarten classes, a Youth Home providing homeless Native American youth with transitional housing, nutrition and transportation programs for elderly, employment and career counseling, an at-risk youth center, family and individual advocacy, and cultural activities.
With a long and successful tradition of implementing health and human services, UIATF is ready to take the next step in fulfilling its mission. By building the People’s Lodge, UIATF will be able to expand its cultural and educational reach into Native and non-Native communities and enhance its ability to effect change on many levels.
